Advent Peace by Jessie Young

There wasn’t a single light in sight. It was darker than dark in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where my family and I were vacationing at a family camp! When we looked up into the night sky, what we saw was breathtaking. Not only could we see tens of thousands of stars, but we could see the Milky Way! It was magnificent.

We were never able to see this many stars, and definitely not the Milky Way, from our backyard in the suburbs of Chicago. If you look up at the night sky in the middle of a city, you’ll be lucky to see the moon! The stars are crowded out by the artificial city lights.

Much in the same way, we spend our days groping around in the darkness looking for peace, looking for fulfillment, looking for relief. We illuminate our lives with the artificial sparkle of distraction. We can no longer find the stars. We are exhausted and worn out because of the frantic pace we set for our lives. We run around turning on more lights to find the one we “need” most, the one we hope will bring the most brightness and peace to our darkness. We don’t even realize we have successfully pushed out the only true lasting light of the world; the only light that is able to once and for all defeat our darkness and give us the peace we long for, Jesus Christ.

This Advent, turn off the artificial sparkle and follow the star, like the wisemen did 2000 years ago. Let it lead you to Jesus, the light of the world. He is the peace you need in the chaos. He is waiting for you to come find rest in him.

“You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart. I will be found by you. This is the Lord’s declaration.” (Jeremiah 29:13-14a)

“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the word.” (John 16:33 CSB)

We can have peace even in what seems like the darkest darkness of suffering, sadness, brokenness, or grief because of Jesus. During Advent we remember Jesus first coming as we wait with hope and expectation of his second coming. We can walk courageously with hearts full of peace because he is God with Us, Emmanuel. Fall down in worship of the only true light that has defeated the darkness.
