Alcohol Ink Painting

Supplies Needed:

-Synthetic paper specifically made for Alcohol Inks. (Yupo brand used in this video)

-Alcohol Inks (Ranger Inks used in this video)

-Isopropyl Alcohol. Any brand is fine from your local drugstore, but make sure it's a higher percentage. 90% or more works best!

-A Straw (or not shown, can also use a hair dryer or embosser but be careful not to get paper too hot or it will warp).

-Paper Towels

-A tray or surface you don't mind getting ink stains on.

-Optional Supplies: Alcohol pen (shown), extra brushes, tray to mix or dab inks, metallic inks for gold or silver "flecks", apron or smock, latex gloves.

*Recommended: Make sure you are creating your Alcohol Ink paintings in a well ventilated environment and take breaks when needed!

*Every Little Seed is not paid or sponsored by any of the brands listed in the video.

Step by Step:

-Choose 2-3 colors of ink to start

-You can either start with the ink drops on the paper and then add the Isopropyl Alcohol (blending agent)..or do it the opposite way. Either is fine and it's fun to experiment!

-"Less is more" with the alcohol inks but you can apply the blending agent more liberally.

-Use a straw to blow the inks and blending agent around the page, moving your body or turning the paper until you get the desired effect.

-Repeat this with as many colors as you like!

-You can continue to work the painting even after it's dry! Just re-add blending agent and begin moving the ink around again.

-The painting will need a UV Varnish to protect it before framing or other finishing ideas.

Other ideas:

-Use a paintbrush to dip in a tiny amount of ink and then "flick" it onto the paper (this works especially well with metallic inks). This is usually a last step.

-Once you have your semi-finished painting done, put isopropyl alcohol in a small spray bottle and lightly "spritz" the ink for a different effect.

-Put alcohol ink and blending agent on the top edge of the paper and then gently tilt the paper down to let gravity pull the colors into a unique pattern.

-Use only one color of alcohol ink and continue adding the blending agent to see how many colors are within the one ink. (The most fun color to try this with is black!)
