Stepping Outside Of Comfort
By Courtney Kendall | Meadowlark Artwork by Kaley Alie
As we learn to rest and follow the playful desires of our creativity, I want to encourage you to try your hand at something new. Not just to challenge yourself creatively but also to experience new relationships. I met one of my dearest friends, Kaley, at a local jewelry class, where we both were learning how to solder. I could tell we would be friends in the first week of class. She was friendly and approachable from the get-go. Since we were both new to the medium, we could explore and make mistakes together. From there, we tried pottery and attended creative business classes together. We have spent hours dreaming up new ideas and encouraging one another to join art markets and start our dream jobs.
As creatives, we have quickly learned that we need each other along this journey. Days alone in the studio can be lonely, so nowadays, we have committed to meeting each other for Open Studio days regularly. It took getting out of my comfort zone to attend the jewelry class, but the effort paid off in a beautiful friendship.
What new creative skill would you like to learn?
Does trying an art class alone seem intimidating? If so, who could you invite to join you?
As for my friend Kaley, we've been friends for 7 years, with no end in sight. She has become a sounding board when I am ready to give up on my dreams, (I never will, but some days are easier than others!) and a person to bounce ideas off of. I can't help but wonder what life would have been like without our friendship.
You can find her making inspiring things at KaleyAlieArt.com or on Instagram @kaleyalieart OR maybe trying her hand at new art class...we are creatives, after all! 🌱
